This 20 gallon DIY semi-aquatic background uses an aqueduct style water
distribution system at the top of the background to feed three separate
waterfalls. The water source is a DIY water bottle power filter hidden in the left
corner behind the center island.
Each waterfall provides continuous water movement throughout for visual
appeal and the health of this semi-aquatic environment.
DIY Aquarium Background
Three Waterfalls
Notice how the black paint slightly overlaps the
edge of the background. The overlap of paint
visually softens the line where the edge of the
background meets the glass.
The paint also hides the pink styrofoam when
viewing the aquarium from the sides or front.
A traditional deluxe aquarium hood covered this
20 gallon DIY semi-aquatic initially.
Within an hour of operation, moisture covered
the front glass to the point that you couldn't see
in the tank.
The solution was to install ventiilation in the
hood. Three rectangular holes were cut using a
40w soldering iron. The holes were then
covered with nylon gutter screen and secured
with black duct tape.
This fixed the condensation issue.
One of three new fire bellied newts is barely
visable perched at the base of a waterfall under
the Anubias Nana plant.
The natural piece of driftwood just seems to be
made for this display. A few Anubias plants and
java fern were also added.
