I had the good fortune of meeting the owner, Michael Bovinet, at the Midwest Cichlid Association Expo in Grandview Missouri last fall and we talked about his shop and the possiblity of my visit in the spring
A Visit to Fish Freaks in Omaha, Nebraska

By Glenn Minor
March 2010

Having heard nothing but good things about Fish Freaks in Omaha Nebraska, I was excited to finally have the opportunity to head north from Kansas City and see for myself.

Just inside the main entrance are several well-stocked shelves. Looking over the inventory, the impression is one of quality and careful selection.
All the basic aquarium equipment needs are covered as well as some specialty items plus a wide selection of hand-picked dry foods to keep your Cichlid population healthy and happy.

Beyond the dry goods section, through an open doorway, is Fish Freaks live stock area.

Mike reports 91 tanks totaling just under 4,600 gallons that support his extensive selection of Cichlid varieties from Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi, as well as a few non-Cichlid species of fish.

Here's Mike with a pair of wild caught Altolamprologus calvus soon to be on their way back to Kansas City with me.
Mike's stock tanks are some of the cleanest I've seen in the hobby. This same high standard of maintenance is apparent in the fish stock as well.

Tanks were consistently healthy and socially well-balanced. Fish Freaks has long had the reputation of being a well-run shop. I've now had the pleasure of seeing this for myself firsthand.
The fish stock is well organized by both species and size, so with a little help from Mike, it's easy to find any particular species you're looking for.

If he doesn't have something in stock, odds are he can order it for you and have it available for pickup or delivery to your front door in a very reasonable amount of time.

Fish Freaks offers a variety of both domestic and international shipping options for their customers.

When all was said and done, my visit to Fish Freaks was quite enjoyable. The only downside was there were far too many fish I wanted to take home that would have to wait for another visit, another day. The pair of Altolamprologus calvus black that did come home with me have settled into their new home with no issues and have already staked their claim amongst the existing Cichlid population in my tank.

Mike effectively raises the bar for the fish keeping industry thru both his fish selection and the high standard with which he maintains his store. For folks within driving distance of the Omaha area, do yourself a favor and stop by to see his shop for yourself.

For those of us who live a little farther out, the Fish Freaks website http://www.fishfreakscichlids.com is a great place to get all the info you need to find and order that special Cichlid variety you're looking for. In my experience, you won't be disappointed.
