Stone Terraces
This is the first of two mother molds that will be
used to duplicate the stone terrace design.
There is most certainly an art to designing both
the silicone and mother molds for easy
separation when the silicone mold is full.
This being my first experience making molds,
all did not go well and the clay stone terrace
master design had to be destroyed in the
process of removing from the silicone and
mother molds.
Following that, small adjustments to the silicone
and mother molds were made to allow for
easier separation.
Mother molds for top and bottom sections of the
stone terrace design were placed in a bucket to
keep them wet as they continued to cure.
This was done to reduce the potential for uneven
curing and cracking.
The mold on the right shows evidence of a first
attempt at making a terracotta colored stone
terrace section.
Following the 30 day curing period
recommended by the manufacturer, our first
completed stone terrace is in place.
The PH level settled down to about 7.4 after a
few weeks in the tank and a few water changes.
This side view shows the depth provided by the
structures which can accommodate artificial or
deep rooting live plants.
Terracotta on the left and light brown on the right
provide an eye catching terraced aquascape.
Some extra substrate on the right adds another
visual dimension to our dramatic aquascape.
A visit to your local rock landscaping store for a
volume quantity of a gravel of your choice can
be an inexpensive solution to aquatic settings
that require significant quantities of
gravel/substrate.
Don't be discouraged if the smallest bag they
sell is 50 lbs. You may find the cost easily
justifies the inconvenience of transporting the
heavier bag.

Dramatic AquaScapes
Anyone ambitious enough to terrace their aquarium with natural rock
understands the challenge of restoring things just as they were after a good
tank cleaning.
The Stone Terraces idea shown here attempts to make an easier task of
maintaining a terraced aquascape.
